Take another look at me, a broken man, no empathy I can’t stay here Falling out of history, a shadow makes me But I can’t stay here Time goes And I can’t stay here Lies show And I can’t stay here now You lost your favorite watch, I’m searching, now But I can’t stay here I believe you, I believe in you But I can’t stay here Time goes And i can’t stay here Lies show And I can’t stay here now We’re leaving forever And everyone knows their way, there Time doesn’t travel still And everyone there is way, way late I can’t take today Hello, I can’t know, now My time is running out I might have to turn you over Can you say that again I can’t stay here I might have to turn you over But never again I can’t stay here I might have to turn you over But never again I can’t stay here I can’t stay here.
2.
Exit Out 03:28
Wait is there anyone you know, who There’s no place left to run Is there anyone you know Hide and I will seek, hide and I will All and all there’s no place left to run You can’t fight it In all there are better ways, there are better ways Assume there are better ways, there are better ways.
3.
We’re leaving so wake up You have to leave all that you have And you have regrets and we all regret the things we can’t change The Playground assassin, I never imagined To be on all fours crawling for the door But I can’t reach, hey Knights to their castles We have a shortage of sand And I’ll meet you back by the totem pole We’ll start the plan You seem so demanding As you fight to defend me And you found me out but there could be more That you can’t see, right now Right now We’re leaving so wake up You have to leave all that you have And you have regrets and we all regret the things we can’t change The playground assassin, I never imagined To be on all fours crawling for the door But I can’t reach.
4.
This cancer grows, this infection of the mind Remote control Did that bush just move, are you in disguise Remote control What’s in a name, what’s in a name, now You say you will but no This can’t happen, distractions Remote control TV never lies, never? Remote control Here’s a word but it’s just another verse Remote control It burns a picture in my brain This name, this name What’s in a name We’ve all gone insane, now Control, control, control Confrontations lie undecided Place your thoughts behind what can’t be spared We all think as a collective Try to escape from the captive created in your mind.
5.
Walk Away 04:12
I’m walkin’ away You said it, you said it I’m walkin’ away, now You said it It can if you let it, your ignorance define you Let it out, well let it out Escape from your shackled hands Let it out well let it out I’m walkin’ away You said it, you said it I’m walkin’ away You said it It can if you let it, your ignorance define you Let it out well let it out Escape from your shackled hands Let it out well let it out Hey what can we say To this awkward silence, awkward silence Sleepless nights, throw them away But can you deal with it You can’t deal with it Throw them away Simplify, cause you’re never gonna change me Alibis, no you never will, you never will Change me And the light goes out I can’t sleep at night, well Sail away, ya we’ll get away Cause you never know what to expect Sail away, ya we’ll get away Cause you never know what to expect.
6.
Homeostasis 05:26
I can’t keep letting go And you think you can win With your get rich quick scheme but maybe it’s just me I will try harder I can see the truth but nothing changes I thought it would be enough but you’re falling on ashes Falling away Episode laps again Falling on deaf ears And you think you can win It won’t happen again I can see the truth but nothing changes I thought it would be enough but you’re falling on ashes I can see right through you and nothing changes I can’t know, I can’t know, what you’re thinking Falling away And it eats at inside me I can hear it inside You’re falling away, You’re falling my way It’s hard to figure out You’re carried away, Don’t take me today It’s hard to figure out.
7.
I want that, as pride sinks in I want what I can’t have I feel I never will, I never will This hell it consumes me And my prideful eyes oh no Oh please please don’t run out Some live and some die You can’t control it Just like the weather Some hope and some cry Is it better yet? I want that, you look so happy I try and try again And you look so happy Now, this feeling consumes me And it feels so good inside I can’t describe, I can’t describe I knew I could swim so I weathered the storm But the waves were crashing down so hard It’s a sad sad story really Always unequal sides on unequal ground I just get dragged down and drowned We’re falling at a record pace It all seems in vain I yell and I scream Can anyone hear me? And the angel says You’re okay now... .
8.
Two lament and argue for a time I heard that it was true once, Let the misconceptions of past aggressions pass Or it’s sock in mouth or it’s a sock in the mouth Sink deeper, think deeper It’s my blood for fame and it can’t be contained Cough it up, yes laugh it up Just sink, just sinking I feel like my head’s in a vice I can’t see the answers, I can’t see the answers I can’t think But they’re all so deceiving and gang up on me If I could think, I’m claustrophobic, I’m catatonic ,In retrospect it’s Five to one, five to one laughing at me They don’t know my plan,They don’t know my strategy It’s my fight for fame Do I really bleed that much Laugh it up, yes cough it up Who said it, you might want to know Who said it, you might want to know You said it and play innocent Do you regret it oh oh.
9.
Our brother stood and said “Hey I have a plan, just listen to me I’ll bring everything back, I will be loved and adored I will be cheered and admired and nothing will be lost That I may be greater than you, and you have no other choice” But another stood and said “I will” Come on let’s go for a ride Where we can live and lie At the writer’s expense We’re being hunted down The hourglass is fading my mind is bending and breaking I want another day So can I be greater than this Do I have another choice? But another stood and said that I will Learn and find and what do you mean, what do you mean Take it in, take it inside, Or you can wake up expecting daisies A punishment for messages of love, Transcribed and box beaten pressed To understand All.
10.
You wait and break down, you break and let down You wait, you wait, you wait And call yourself a spy Offer me money, offer me your gold Wait your offers are worthless I’m told I’m painting a picture No, I’m making a memory and I hope that there won’t be regrets Inside, not disclosed just detached This is the place where I place all your lies Can you feel? can you feel? it’s so surreal to me Can you hear? You can hear and that’s all that is left Take me out in style.

Dead, dead and gone Dead, dead and gone.

about

Before emo was called emo it was inspired by thoughtful, post-hardcore artists like Umbrella. Music may not have been so consumable back then, but that made it so much more satisfying.

Umbrella, a key member of the indie-rock scene established by a number of high school and college aged bands in the Mesa, Arizona area, circa 1995-2005. The local genre coined "480-area-core" by Mesa band Before Braille, also included notable bands such as October's First Hero, Foreign Holiday, Lydia, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, Treehouse Cadillacs, Felix, The Format, The Manhattan Project and of course, Jimmy Eat World, among others who attended Mountain View, Westwood and other Mesa and Gilbert High Schools.

If you have been rightly disappointed by the last decade of rock music, Umbrella may be a nice introduction to what you once knew as 'emo' in the 90s, 'indie rock' in the aughts and 'better than what is widely available' rock, now. These kids were too good for their own good.

Take another look at me, a broken man, no empathy
I can’t stay here
Falling out of history, a shadow makes me
But I can’t stay here
Time goes
And I can’t stay here
Lies show
And I can’t stay here now
You lost your favorite watch, I’m searching, now
But I can’t stay here
I believe you, I believe in you
But I can’t stay here
Time goes
And i can’t stay here
Lies show
And I can’t stay here now
We’re leaving forever
And everyone knows their way, there
Time doesn’t travel still
And everyone there is way, way late
I can’t take today
Hello, I can’t know, now
My time is running out
I might have to turn you over
Can you say that again
I can’t stay here
I might have to turn you over
But never again
I can’t stay here
I might have to turn you over
But never again
I can’t stay here
I can’t stay here

2. Exit Out
Johnathan Kingsley: Vocals, Guitar
Nick Estrada: Guitar
Jon Hajak: Bass
Justin Miller: Percussion

Wait is there anyone you know, who
There’s no place left to run
Is there anyone you know
Hide and I will seek, hide and I will
All and all there’s no place left to run
You can’t fight it
In all there are better ways, there are better ways
Assume there are better ways, there are better ways

3. Rise and Falling
Johnathan Kingsley: Vocals, Guitar
Nick Estrada: Guitar
Jon Hajak: Bass
Justin Miller: Percussion

We’re leaving so wake up
You have to leave all that you have
And you have regrets and we all regret
the things we can’t change
The Playground assassin, I never imagined
To be on all fours crawling for the door
But I can’t reach, hey
Knights to their castles
We have a shortage of sand
And I’ll meet you back by the totem pole
We’ll start the plan
You seem so demanding
As you fight to defend me
And you found me out but there could be more
That you can’t see, right now
Right now
We’re leaving so wake up
You have to leave all that you have
And you have regrets and we all regret
the things we can’t change
The playground assassin, I never imagined
To be on all fours crawling for the door
But I can’t reach

4. Remote Control
Johnathan Kingsley: Vocals, Guitar
Nick Estrada: Guitar, Vocals
Jon Hajak: Bass
Justin Miller: Percussion

This cancer grows, this infection of the mind
Remote control
Did that bush just move, are you in disguise
Remote control
What’s in a name, what’s in a name, now
You say you will but no
This can’t happen, distractions
Remote control
TV never lies, never?
Remote control
Here’s a word but it’s just another verse
Remote control
It burns a picture in my brain
This name, this name
What’s in a name
We’ve all gone insane, now
Control, control, control
Confrontations lie undecided
Place your thoughts behind what can’t be spared
We all think as a collective
Try to escape from the captive created in your mind

5. Walk Away
Johnathan Kingsley: Vocals, Guitar
Nick Estrada: Guitar, Vocals
Jon Hajak: Bass
Justin Miller: Percussion

I’m walkin’ away
You said it, you said it
I’m walkin’ away, now
You said it
It can if you let it, your ignorance define you
Let it out, well let it out
Escape from your shackled hands
Let it out well let it out
I’m walkin’ away
You said it, you said it
I’m walkin’ away
You said it
It can if you let it, your ignorance define you
Let it out well let it out
Escape from your shackled hands
Let it out well let it out
Hey what can we say
To this awkward silence, awkward silence
Sleepless nights, throw them away
But can you deal with it
You can’t deal with it
Throw them away
Simplify, cause you’re never gonna change me
Alibis, no you never will, you never will
Change me
And the light goes out
I can’t sleep at night, well
Sail away, ya we’ll get away
Cause you never know what to expect
Sail away, ya we’ll get away
Cause you never know what to expect

6. Homeostasis
Johnathan Kingsley: Vocals, Guitar
Nick Estrada: Guitar
Jon Hajak: Bass

I can’t keep letting go
And you think you can win
With your get rich quick scheme
but maybe it’s just me
I will try harder
I can see the truth but nothing changes
I thought it would be enough but you’re falling on ashes
Falling away
Episode laps again
Falling on deaf ears
And you think you can win
It won’t happen again
I can see the truth but nothing changes
I thought it would be enough but you’re falling on ashes
I can see right through you and nothing changes
I can’t know, I can’t know, what you’re thinking
Falling away
And it eats at inside me
I can hear it inside
You’re falling away, You’re falling my way
It’s hard to figure out
You’re carried away, Don’t take me today
It’s hard to figure out

Some live and some die
You can’t control it
Just like the weather
Some hope and some cry
Is it better yet?
I want that, you look so happy
I try and try again
And you look so happy
Now, this feeling consumes me
And it feels so good inside
I can’t describe, I can’t describe
I knew I could swim so I weathered the storm
But the waves were crashing down so hard
It’s a sad sad story really
Always unequal sides on unequal ground
I just get dragged down and drowned

8. My head and a Vice
Johnathan Kingsley: Vocals, Guitar
Nick Estrada: Guitar
Jon Hajak: Bass
Justin Miller: Percussion

Two lament and argue for a time
I heard that it was true once,
Let the misconceptions of past aggressions pass
Or it’s sock in mouth or it’s a sock in the mouth
Sink deeper, think deeper
It’s my blood for fame and it can’t be contained
Cough it up, yes laugh it up
Just sink, just sinking
I feel like my head’s in a vice
I can’t see the answers, I can’t see the answers
I can’t think
But they’re all so deceiving and gang up on me
If I could think, I’m claustrophobic, I’m catatonic ,In retrospect it’s
Five to one, five to one laughing at me
They don’t know my plan,They don’t know my strategy
It’s my fight for fame
Do I really bleed that much
Laugh it up, yes cough it up
Who said it, you might want to know
Who said it, you might want to know
You said it and play innocent
Do you regret it oh oh

9. At the Writer’s Expense
Johnathan Kingsley: Vocals, Guitar
Nick Estrada: Guitar
Jon Hajak: Bass
Justin Miller: Percussion

Our brother stood and said
“Hey I have a plan, just listen to me
I’ll bring everything back, I will be loved and adored
I will be cheered and admired
and nothing will be lost
That I may be greater than you,
and you have no other choice”
But another stood and said
“I will”
Come on let’s go for a ride
Where we can live and lie
At the writer’s expense
We’re being hunted down
The hourglass is fading
my mind is bending and breaking
I want another day
So can I be greater than this
Do I have another choice?
But another stood and said that I will
Learn and find and what do you mean, what do you mean
Take it in, take it inside, Or you can wake up expecting daisies
A punishment for messages of love, Transcribed and box beaten pressed
To understand All

Inside, not disclosed just detached
This is the place where I place all your lies
