The label first balked at the idea of including this song on the record, especially to open the album. They later agreed to allow it only if the title included the word “Prelude.”
During the mastering process the song was supposed to only be included as a “negative track.” What that means is: the mastering engineer would use a trick in the clocking process where one could create negative space in a song before the song actually starts at 0:00. So, the only way the listener could find the song and play it would be by rewinding the song before it starts. This is tricky to do with the opening song of the album, and apparently too tricky for the software on which we were using in the mastering studio. So, the decision was made to leave the song on the record as track 1 and move “The Spanish Dagger” to track 2.
This decision alienated some critics. It was probably the greatest criticism levied on the album. Years later I can’t imagine The Rumor starting any other way. Nothing could be more fitting to the title and mood of the album than starting it with Secret No.7.
All things for a reason, I suppose. (Sorry
Buddyhead.net. We didn’t mean to take ourselves soooo seriously! Haha)
